Portion Is Important

With the rise in food prices, we are forced to waste less. Every morsel is valuable. So slow down, chew more and savour the flavour. I always portion out the courses of my dinner. Variety, is the spice of life. Try new foods and let your mind experience eating, through the physical senses of your body. Be thankful for every bite!

Straw Power

I hope everyone that is following the “Master Diet” plan, is discovering the power it has. There are a few details that I will be discussing, soon. The first detail I would like to highlight is the power of the straw. When you are drinking liquids, during the fast time, sucking through a straw, is a great aid in helping to hydrate. Dehydration is a chronic condition, which is easily fixed!

I aim to drink 8 cups of pure water everyday! On top of that, I drink iced teas. My favourite is green with lemon. Or if I feel like a more tropical tea, a mango coconut oolong. Mmm…I usually alternate between ice water and iced tea.

It must be noted that drinking coffee dehydrates you. The deficit is a 1:2 ratio.

In A Nut Shell

I believe that I have succeeded in mastering my diet.
Here it is:
1.   Water
2.   Coffee (w/ nut milk)
3.   Water (iced w/lemon, tea)
4.   Noon Power Smoothie
5.   Coffee
6.   Soup
7.   Dinner
8.   Salad
9.   Cheese Plate
10. Dessert

Essentially, I fast from 8 pm to noon, 16 hours. I hydrate with ice water and iced teas all morning. In my morning coffee, I use nut milks like cashew, almond and coconut. I break my fast and have my noon power smoothie. I eat fresh fruit and I continue to hydrate.
Then, I have my appetizer starting @ 6 o’clock. Dinner @ 6:30; Salad @ 7; Cheese @ 7:30 and Dessert @ 8. I am ready for bed @ 11, with a full tummy, and my body can digest the food, while I rest. In the morning, all of the wonderful rainbow of foods that I ate are ready to be used for fuel. A new day begins.

The Fourth Course

I know I am not alone in feeling like, at this point, I need to eat more. I call this the fourth course. So, my salad is done and it is time to let the digestion happen. I am feeling tired and ironically, peckish. There is a reason for the fourth course and the finalè, dessert. After you have settled in for the night, it is nice to be able to have a more enjoyable, relaxed course. This is where the fourth course, cheese plate, comes in. Again, serving size is small here. Good, high quality cheese is expensive and should be eaten sparingly. On the plate we have cheeses, fruit and fresh baquette. Again, all good quality, fresh foods. Dessert is the sweet that you crave, after every dinner. I recommend a small serving of chocolate mousse or sorbet. Bon Appètite!

*Remember, eat as much “natural” food as possible. Make as much food from scratch, yourself, and steer away from ingredients that are not simple and delicious.

Salad Sweeper

Call me French, but I am going to now dive into my third course. This is important. Eating a salad with fresh greens, will help “sweep” my dinner and aid in the digestion. Just a small salad, like the small soup appetizer.

A really simple salad is:

Fresh Greens-romaine, green leaf, etc.
Fresh Herbs-parsley, dill, etc.
Fresh Vegetables or Fruits
Nuts or Seeds
Olive Oil, Fresh Lemon and Sea Salt

Main Course

I just finished my yummy soup appetizer. I am feeling my appetite start to increase. What is cooking, that smells soooo good? About a half an hour after my soup, dinner is served. Dinner is a good quality meat or beans. I aim to eat fish twice, chicken twice, beans twice and pork or beef once. The variety goes: fish, chicken, beans, fish, pork or beef, beans and chicken. I always have a cooked vegetable and a starch. My plate is 50% cooked vegetable, 25% meat and 25% starch. A good starch is rice, potato, pasta or bread. Variety is key. Also, learning how to use herbs and spices to make a yummy tasting dinner!

Lunch As An Appetizer

Okay! So I had my power smoothie and now what? I am feeling full, yet energized. It is time to get more work done. My afternoon is busy getting things done. I keep hydrated with plenty of ice water. I might grab a peice of fresh fruit, if I feel the need. My next break, fast approaches. This time it’s my coffee break. I enjoy sipping on a cup, as I catch up on the day with my husband and relax. We discuss our dinner plans. But first and foremost, what will be our appetizer? I start to wind down for the day, as the sun starts to set. Light the fire, put on the pot of fresh soup. I think it is essential to eat soup before any meal. Firstly, the broth is extremely nourishing and secondly, the soup fills you up, so you can reduce the ammount of the main course, which demands high quality and low quantity. Fresh soups are easily made from the leftovers of the meat bones and vegetables from the dinner before. So, in a sense, lunch is served as an appetizer. Let the feast begin!

Breaking the Fast

So, here we are, high noon. The morning was productive. I took the dog for a walk, did my morning work out, and did all of my daily chores. I am feeling energized, hydrated and ready for a break.
I don’t believe in throwing back a whole bunch of hard to digest food, at this time. Instead, I plan on being as gentle as a baby, on my body. What is the best food? Well, it may not be that big of a shocker. I call it my power smoothie! Yes, more liquids. I chew my smoothie though.
It starts with ice, water, fruit, greens, coconut oil and some protein. I would like to keep as vegan as possible. Ahhhh…the roar of the blender gets me excited to suck back a tasty, energized smmmoothie!!

A side note as well, is that I loooove to ice my green tea. Just add a l’il lemon and noon breakfast will come shining in.

Mastering My Diet

To everyone out there who struggles with food and eating, listen up! I know it sounds clichè, but my New Years resolution is to master my diet.
So begins my journey. Sure, I’d love to lose a few pounds, but what I really want is to feel good.
It starts with fasting, ironically. I know we think that eating food will give us energy. I am not purposing giving up food or starvation by any means. However, the idea is to understand that digesting food to be used for energy takes, well, ENERGY! That is why we always feel so tired after eating a big meal.
So, I have figured out to fast during the day, while I work, play or whatever. I drink my morning coffee, then I drink a lot of ice water.
I will let you know when and what I have for my breakfast, in my next post.
Cheers!
